Helicopters cover trips where a fixed-wing runway is the wrong tool. Alpine resort transfers, city-to-city hops, and access to private helipads in mountain villages are the primary use case in Switzerland. The Valais, Engadine, and Bernese Oberland have helipads accessible only by helicopter or on foot, and ski season brings consistent demand for point-to-resort transfers throughout the Alps.
Typical Aircraft
The Bell 407, Bell JetRanger, Bell LongRanger, Airbus Helicopters (formerly Eurocopter) platforms, and the Sikorsky S-76 are the common charter helicopters. The S-76 carries the largest cabin in this group and is commonly used for executive transfers between city centers and mountain destinations.
When a Helicopter Fits the Switzerland Trip
Zurich or Geneva to a mountain resort helipad is the most common routing. Airport-to-resort transfers during ski season, where road time from the nearest fixed-wing airport is two hours or more, are where helicopters save the most time. Summer glacier tours, private event transfers, and film-location logistics in the Alps also fit the category. For transfers between city centers where landing pads are available, helicopters can cover Zurich to Geneva in under 40 minutes.
Vetting Behind Every Trip
Every operator, aircraft, and crew goes through our internal due diligence before we present any options. Our internal standards meet or exceed what the FAA requires:
- FAR Part 135 charter operators for traditional private aircraft, or FAR Part 121 for airliner-size and group trips (or the foreign equivalent on international legs)
- Operator subscription to Wyvern and ARGUS reviewed where the operator participates.
- Pilot experience and operator incident history reviewed before we recommend an aircraft.
- Fewer than 60 brokers worldwide hold Premium Wyvern Broker Member status, and Air Charter Advisors is one of them.
Switzerland-Specific Patterns We Plan Around
Ski season runs December through March and drives the sharpest demand spikes we see. Samedan airport (serving St. Moritz) and Bern-Belp (serving the Bernese Oberland, including Grindelwald) handle mountain transfers; book early for January and February. The World Economic Forum in Davos each January compresses Zurich-area availability significantly. Art Basel in June is the Basel demand window. For summer events such as the Locarno Film Festival and the Montreux Jazz Festival, advance notice on aircraft gives us more routing options.
