Pistons fly short hops and reach airports that nothing else can. Two to six seats, range typically under 1,000 nautical miles, and access to small grass and unprepared strips. In Switzerland the category is most useful for local general aviation trips and access to airports that jets and turboprops cannot use.
Typical Aircraft
The Cessna 340, Piper Navajo (PA-31), Piper Aztec, Beechcraft Baron 58, and Cirrus SR22 are the working piston charter platforms. Range and payload are limited compared to turboprops, but operating costs are lower on very short legs and the category opens airports that no other aircraft can use.
When Pistons Fit the Switzerland Trip
Very short Swiss regional flights, access to small airports and grass strips not served by jets, and general aviation positioning trips are the primary use cases. If the trip involves a stop at a small airfield in the Jura or central Switzerland, pistons often fit where nothing else will. For most trips involving Zurich, Geneva, or Basel as origin or destination, a turboprop or light jet is typically the more practical fit.
Vetting Behind Every Trip
Every operator, aircraft, and crew goes through our internal due diligence before we present any options. Our internal standards meet or exceed what the FAA requires:
- FAR Part 135 charter operators for traditional private aircraft, or FAR Part 121 for airliner-size and group trips (or the foreign equivalent on international legs)
- Operator subscription to Wyvern and ARGUS reviewed where the operator participates.
- Pilot experience and operator incident history reviewed before we recommend an aircraft.
- Fewer than 60 brokers worldwide hold Premium Wyvern Broker Member status, and Air Charter Advisors is one of them.
Switzerland-Specific Patterns We Plan Around
Ski season runs December through March and drives the sharpest demand spikes we see. Samedan airport (serving St. Moritz) and Bern-Belp (serving the Bernese Oberland, including Grindelwald) handle mountain transfers; book early for January and February. The World Economic Forum in Davos each January compresses Zurich-area availability significantly. Art Basel in June is the Basel demand window. For summer events such as the Locarno Film Festival and the Montreux Jazz Festival, advance notice on aircraft gives us more routing options.
